Tyler Candelora, a native of the central Pennsylvania Coal Region, is a sophomore at Bucknell University. He is expected to graduate in May 2019 with a B.A. degree in Comparative Humanities and Spanish, including minors in Translation Studies and French.
During the summer of 2016, Tyler was selected for the Emerging Scholars Program at Bucknell University; he conducted research on the cultural significances of Shamokin and Coal Township by analyzing ten monuments.
As a result, he created an interactive map of the monuments using the geo-spatial plugin Neatline. Furthermore, Tyler has continued to work with the Coal Collections research team, recently investigating the various immigrant groups in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania.
Currently, during the summer of 2017, Tyler is a research fellow of the Digital Pedagogy Center at Bucknell University. He is researching representations of coal miners throughout the Coal Region (and possibly Chile’s coal mining districts) by analyzing monuments, literature, photography, and other mediums. Using digital humanities tools, Tyler intends to create a network of digital maps that illustrates the monuments and an archive of the collected metadata.
