As Digital Scholarship summer fellows, we will conduct meaningful investigations, while collaborating with one another to inform, critique, and help achieve impactful digital research.
Throughout the summer, aside from our independent research areas, we will work together to discuss each other’s projects. It is imperative that we critique each work, creating a high standard of intellectual rigor and mastering of digital platforms. We will critique the accessibility of data for those not involved with a certain researcher’s particular discipline. We will commit to understanding each other’s different projects and help one another – whether it be finding articles, teaching digital platforms, or experimenting with one’s data sets. Through this collaborative effort, we will each achieve a successful Digital Scholarship project.
Over the course of the summer we will work to gain new understandings of the different academic fields in which we are working, in order to teach and learn from our research and share it on to one another. Our work must be original, meaningful, and impactful in order to defend the field of Digital Scholarship.
We will work to understand Digital Scholarship from all angles. Collaboration, research into similar projects, and readings will allow our perception and knowledge of Digital Scholarship to develop further as we progress. By making an effort to work simultaneously in the same space, we will support one another’s projects and share the progress we have made over the eight weeks. We see Digital Scholarship as an area with tremendous growth potential, and our deepest understanding of Digital Scholarship is key to having a solid foundation for this growth.
We also aim to understand more about the digital tools available, and choose specific platforms that are most corroborative and relevant given our individual research projects.
We will fail. We will reject that failure carries negative connotations. We will succeed. We will disagree, and we will become stronger as a group because of this. We will gain knowledge in areas in which we have never before dabbled. Life is richest when we become good at many things, and there is no doubt our lives will be enriched through this program.

By participating in the Bucknell Digital Scholarship Summer Research program, fellows will be able to:
- Value the process of creating a digital project (not just the final project, but the steps undertaken to produce a project).
- Understand the research process and apply research skills to undertake an academic, public-facing digital scholarship project.
- Write for a public audience on the web.
- Critically evaluate digital projects for methodology, integration and choice of digital tools, scholarship and design.
- Contribute documentation of any processes, procedures, tools, and code to benefit the larger digital scholarship community.
- Participate and engage in the digital scholarship community of practice.
Our interest in developing this program takes its roots from a presentation we attended at the 2016 Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference. In the panel presentation “Defining Student Success through Digital Scholarship Initiatives,” students and librarians from Gettysburg College and Lafayette College presented on their librarian-led, student-centered digital scholarship research programs. We thank R.C. Miessler at Gettysburg and Sarah Morris at Lafayette for sharing ideas and insights as we planned our program.
